Lijsje Flepkous: drinking and fireworks
The most original listening experience so far was Jan Starters’ sung farce ‘Lijsje Flepkous’. Street-performed by singers and musicians of Camerata Trajectina and preceded by quibbling market-singers. A performance filled with booze, live fireworks and raw eggs down pants.
Music: nimble songs. - Not quiet opera, but highly amusing.

Camerata Trajectina shows how Knelis (Bernard Loonen) tries to out-drink the by him coveted Lijsje, but not only is he outwitted by her, he also ends up with strange discomforts in his pants.

We were there and saw Maaike Martens as the wisecracking Lijsje, and Bernard Loonen as the lovesick Knelis.
The (very lively!) direction is by Marc Krone. Set and costumes (very special!) are made by Freija Wouters. Entrance is free.
Lijsje Flepkous complete again
Singing farce completely reconstructed After more than 350 years, the sung farce ‘Lijsje Flepkous’ is complete again.
The poet Jan Jansz. Starter the piece in his Frisian Lusthof (1621), but added no musical notation. It could therefore never be staged in its original form.
Prof Dr. Peter Louis Grijp has succeeded to reconstruct the melodies of Starters farce thanks to scientific research in the Dutch Song Database of the Meertens Institute.
Only three of the eight melodies were known, but through ingenious ICT techniques he managed to track down the remaining five melodies.
Most melodies come from England – not so strange as English comedians surprised the early seventeenth century continent with their virtuoso singing, acting, and dance acrobatics Grijp could track down one Dutch song, Als gij komt in den Hage, which Starter used for the song Meisje met jouw blanke billen.
The recovered melodies can be characterised best as expressions of a flamboyant popular culture. The integral klucht had its premiere at the Early Music Festival Utrecht, in the open air on the Buurtkerkhof.
Camerata Trajectina performed the farce in the direction of Marc Krone.
The scientific preparation did not trickle down into the performance . The loudly singing Lijsje Flepkous drank her horny suitor under the table and taught him a lesson with raw eggs and fuming fireworks
