Germany’s largest open-air theater, with 4,000 seats and 300 cast members on stage—I could hardly imagine a bigger challenge. But "My Fair Lady" was the very first musical I ever saw. I was six, and my uncle Tabe played Jamie.
So I couldn’t say no when I was offered the chance to direct this classic.
Real horses for Ascot, vintage cars to transport the visitors at Covent Garden, and a group of people who were hyper-motivated to make it a resounding success. What else could you do but say “yes”?
I accepted the stage opening of more than 172 meters as a given and embarked on a truly Sisyphean task: more than three months of rehearsals.
But the result was well worth it: a true triumph, as evidenced by the reactions of the audience and the press. Sold-out performances followed.
There was even a sing-along version.
Ötigheim pulled it off beautifully: a magnificent production in a magnificent setting; and with a new, modern ending that G.B. Shaw would have been proud of.
